Talking about Chinese brand Haval today, more specifically its H6 SUV. I was anxious to see if this latest model had lifted the brands image especially as its in the highly competitive mid-sized SUV segment.  The new Haval H6 comes in three grades, Premium, Lux and Ultra, all powered by a 2-litre turbo petrol engine driving through a 7-speed dual clutch automatic.

All with the benefit of a 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty and a very competitive starting price of $31,990 drive-away. I tested the mid-spec H6 Lux at $34,990 drive-away, which offers incredible value. But how does its stack up against the big selling competition from Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai and Nissan.

A better warranty, far more equipment for the money, a stack of active and passive safety gear and a fabulous 360-degree camera. Fit and finish competitive in a roomy five seat cabin with comfortable faux leather seats and excellent load space.

Some aspects of the cabin however lack appeal like the rotary dial gear selector while the well-sized high-resolution twin 10.25 inch digital screen can be fiddily to use and the instrumentation graphics small and hard to read in our bright light. Well spec’d with twin USB ports and air vents in the rear but the LUX model lacks a power tailgate which is such a handy feature.  Drive impressions next segment.
