There’s a buzz of activity at the home of Rolls-Royce

Motor Torque

An unlikely car story this week – like most car maker’s Rolls-Royce has temporarily stopped production at its Goodwood Plant in East Sussex but there’s a buzz of activity still on its 42-acre site – in 2017 Rolls-Royce established an Apiary with a number wooden beehives in response to the real and present threat facing Britain’s Honey Bee population. Honey Bees being the principal pollinators of numerous tree and plant species including many fruit and vegetable crops that are crucial to the local agricultural economy located around its manufacturing facility. A shortage of suitable forage mainly due to habitat loss in recent years has put their numbers under growing pressure. The company points out its 250,000 strong bee workforce is likely to exceed their 2020 volume targets for the Rolls-Royce of honey. The exercise aims to reverse the decline of bees in South East England – also supporting farmers and landowners in creating flower-rich corridors to help bees and other pollinator species to survive.
