The last of the Monuments Men passes away in Chicago aged 98
The Monuments Men were a group of mostly American, Australian and British men and women – museum curators, art historians, librarians, architects and some artists who recovered thousands of paintings, sculptures, gold and other cultural objects from the destruction of war and theft by the Nazis between 1943 and 1946. Barrister and historian Douglas Hassall tells Michael McLaren how this group worked tirelessly to restore these works to their rightful owners.
