Tax on electric vehicles would slam brakes on sales

Mike Jeffreys

Michael is joined by Behyad Jafari, CEO of the Electric Vehicle Council, who asserts that the announcement South Australia & Victoria would tax electric vehicles was counterproductive and made little sense.

The sale of electric vehicles in Australia is already much lower than many other nations with South Australia making up only about 0.1% of cars on the roads.

“Fuel excise income is not quarantined for roads and will drop in the long run,” Mr Jafari says.

“But as we shift away from petrol and diesel, diseases linked to air pollution and other costs associated with climate change will also decrease.

“Now is the time to be encouraging EVs, not holding them back with a new tax.”
