Sydney City Council sensibly bans the trial of e-scooters

David Berthon

I spoke recently of the three-month trial of e-scooters in N.S.W. and my concerns regarding safety issues with pedestrians.  Certain councils have agreed to the trial however Sydney City Council has decided not to go ahead concerned over safety issues and a lack of appropriate infrastructure.

Under the conditions of the e-scooter trial riding can only take place on bike paths and shared paths, they’re banned on footpaths and at night, restricted to 25km/hour on bike paths, 10km/hour on shared paths. If trials in other states are anything to go by safety is a big issue – in Perth last week a 70-year-old grandmother was mowed down and hospitalized with broken bones, the latest in string of accidents in recent months that has seen two deaths and multiple injuries and only this week a 15-year-old teenager died in an e-scooter crash in Brisbane.

I’m David Berthon.
