SUV’s now account for more than 50 per cent of new vehicles sold

One observation over the Xmas Holiday break was the number of SUVs on the road – such a practical body configuration especially for a family with its passenger/luggage configuration – in this country there popularity has seen them eclipse the sales of the family sedan. Looking at last year’s sales figures SUVs, or Sports Utility Vehicles, now account for 50.6 per cent of all new vehicles sold.

Five years ago it was 37.4 percent. There is now over 150 SUV models on the Australian market, the numbers swelled in recent years by the light SUV category which now has 17 players. And of course, the numbers also bolstered at the top end of the market by luxury SUV’s, often referred to as SAV’s or Sports Activity Vehicles.

The station wagon and hatchback was once the preferred utility choice in a new vehicle however the SUV has well and truly stolen their mantle.
