St John volunteer awarded Senior Australian of the year

This year Senior Australian of the year has been awarded to Valmai Dempsey.

Valmai has dedicated more than 50 years of her life to helping others as a volunteer for St John Ambulance. She is also one of Canberra longest-serving volunteers.

Valmai has faced some of her biggest challenges over the past couple of years with the Black summer bushfire which were then followed by the covid-19 pandemic. Through the bushfires, Valmai led 40 volunteers as they supported fire-affected communities.

She hopes to use her platform to call for learner drivers to become the next generation of mobile first aiders.

She highlights to John Stanley how all life is precious and that is why it is critical that all Australians learn first aid as it helps save lives.
