Social Media Companies are Threatening Our Democracy

One of the biggest threats to our democracy is social media companies’ ability to amplify misinformation online and interrupt our national discourse.

Executive Director of Reset Australia Chris Cooper says they are pushing the government to introduce policies that don’t just focus on content takedowns or identifying online ‘trolls’.

He says, we need broad structural change that aims to change social media companies’ algorithms in order to stop spreading “sensational” content.

Mr. Cooper says that while it’s “human nature to be engaged by the sensational and the outrageous” the business model behind these platforms is the core of this problem.

Reset Australia Executive Director Chris Cooper joins Luke Grant to discuss the impact of social media on our democracy.
