Private security not the answer to growing crime rates

To protect council workers enforcing local laws on street drinking and begging, Melbourne is trialing private security guards to support local law officers facing increased assaults. This reflects a national trend of outsourcing security for tasks once handled by police.

While beneficial for the industry, it puts unarmed, minimally trained guards in dangerous situations, dealing with unpredictable, often violent individuals.

With police numbers failing to keep pace with crime, how long before something goes wrong?
