Premature Babies marathon

John Stanley

In 2006 Sophie Smith and her late husband had the unthinkable happen, they lost their prematurely born triplets due to complications during birth.

A year later, Sophie founded Running for Premature Babies. To this day, the charity organisation has directly benefited over 8-thousand babies, a record milestone for a worthy cause close to Sophie’s heart.

John caught up with Sophie again for a chat shortly after her charity completed the ‘Premmie Marathon Challenge’, a virtual event raising funds to provide neonatal equipment to hospitals around Australia and help give sick and premature babies a better chance of survival.

Participants chose between a 21km half marathon distance to run, all the way up to a 300km ultra-marathon distance.

So far, they have raised $340,000, and there’s still time to donate. If you missed out on donating, visit their website.
