Peugeot’s upgraded 5008 SUV – French style at a premium price

David Berthon

Going French today – driving Peugeot’s  5008, a mid-sized 7-seat SUV which first arrived here around three years ago more as a people-mover but was recently given a significant update. A front wheel drive only SUV in two models 1.6-litre turbo petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, both in a single GT grade. The petrol GT I tested $51,990, in diesel $59,990. These prices push the Peugeot 5008 close to premium territory where there’s some impressive models from the German competition.

Having said that there’s much to like on this French SUV with real character that sets it apart. The latest styling really draws eyes – impressive frontal treatment and a very practical interior, the second row in three separate seats practical and flexible for a family plus a great range of colours. Importantly, safety equipment and some interesting technology have been added in this latest series without an increase in price. What shone for me was the package size inside – with the third row seats folded the cargo space at 952 litres in impressive.

To me the Peugeot 5008 is best as a five-seater, the third row seats sized only for kids disappointingly have no air vents with airbags that don’t reach the rear. The 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine needs a diet of premium unleaded fuel and with city driving I managed 8.9L/100. Warranty – 5 years/unlimited km.
