People seeking asylum in Australia in record numbers

Former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Immigration & author of ‘Population Shock’, Abul Rizvi, tells Luke that for the first time in our history, Asylum cases in Australia now exceed 100,000 people.

He believes that despite the intense attention the media has paid to boat arrivals for the last decade, very few of these 100,000 asylum cases actually arrived by sea.

Rather, the bulk arrived during an intense period of labour trafficking of Malaysian and Chinese nationals from 2014-15 until the start of the pandemic by air.
