NSW’s most historic number plate passed the $10 million mark at auction.

David Berthon

Early number plates have long been sought after by collectors and two and three-figure heritage plates in recent years have yielded incredible prices at auction.
However, the current online auction for N.S.W. number plate 1 by Lloyds
Auctions have already seen it rocket past the $10 million mark with 27 days still to
run. First issued to the States Police Commissioner in 1910 Number plate 1 was
acquired in the 1930s by Sir Frederick Stewart owner of the then Sydney Bus
Company, for his large 1927 12-cylinder Daimler, a car that I had the pleasure to
drive back in the 1970’s. On Sir Fredericks’ passing number plate, 1 was fitted to
Lady Stewarts’s Ford Fairmont LTD and seen regularly around the Sydney suburb
of Epping. The final bid for this most desirable and prestigious number plate will
be very interesting to see.
