New record for car market

Motor Torque

The car market posted a new record last year with 1, 178, 133 cars, SUV’s and commercials sold, an increase of 2 per cent on 2015. However, in the last few months demand softened compared to the start of the year. Underlying the strength and demand in the light commercial market the Toyota Hilux topped the sales charts for the first time in the Australian automotive market. Quite clearly the pickup has become a firm favourite with Aussie buyers representing 18.5 per cent of total vehicle sales – 67 percent of these light commercial sales were 4 x 4 variants – more than ever the 4 x 4 dual cab ute has become a dual role vehicle – a workhorse through the week and a recreational family vehicle on weekend. And of course many are now carrying car like comfort and convenience features. In addition to the top-selling Toyota Hilux the fourth best-selling vehicle last year was Ford’s Ranger ute, 83 per cent of which were 4 x 4’s.
