Much talk about synthetic fuel to prolong the life of the internal combustion engine

David Berthon

Whilst there’s ever increasing talk of motoring moving towards electrification, or e-mobility, there’s also been a lot of chat about the manufacture of synthetic fuel, sometimes referred to as eFuel, as a means of preserving the internal combustion engine.

Porsche announced last week that it was investing Aud$100 million dollars in the development of eFuel facilities in Chile, the U.S. and Australia, acquiring a 12.5 percent interest in Santiago based HIF Global, the international project developers of eFuel production. Whilst not wanting to become a major producer of eFuel Porsche is keen to ensure its internal combustion engine models, such as the 911 sportscar, could still be driven and enjoyed into the future while emitting up to 85 percent fewer emissions.

eFuel remains of particular interest to industries which electrification is not viable such as aviation and shipping. HIF Australia is currently considering plant locations in North Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.
