Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 SUV, the German car makers best seller now even better
Driving the new mid-size Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV today – the second
generation now comes in just one model – the GLC 300, the entry GLC200 in the
first series now dropped as most buyers opted for the higher spec model. At
around $111,000 drive-away the new GLC 300 is $11,000 dearer to the first series
but its been highly spec’d with only two available options. Sitting on a slightly
wider track and longer wheelbase it features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine
driving all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic – the engine assisted by a 48-
volt Integrated Starter Generator – mild hybrid assistance that provides an
additional 17kW of power and 200Nm of torque – this combination also helps the
dreaded start/stop lag on some earlier models. The GLC SUV has in recent times
become Mercedes-Benz top-seller and one can understand why – more so in this
highly equipped second generation – with AMG exterior highlights its good
looking, the interior, dash layout and controls first class, great air vents too, with
the centre 11.9-inch infotainment touch screen a highlight. The GLC 300 is more
expensive than the excellent Genesis GV70 and BMW X3 SUVs but both are
heavily stacked with options while resale values also tend to fall in Mercedes-
Benz’s favour. I’m David Berthon
