Mercedes Benz 5th generation C200 Sedan, a big step up from its predecessor

Driving Mercedes-Benz fifth generation W206 C-Class sedan. A model that’s
reinstated the C-Class’s popularity, sales in the first quarter up 144 percent on
the same time last year, and still Mercedes-Benz best seller. 25mm longer in the
wheelbase with 35mm more rear knee room it comes in two models, both with
mild hybrid assistance – the C200 with 1.5-litre 150kW turbo engine from $78,900
and the C300 with 2.0-litre 190kW turbo from $90,400 – these prices $12 – 15,000
more than the old model – a big lift over the previous series, although it does now
include an AMG styling kit inside and out, previously a costly option. And there’s
a new second-generation 48V electric pack which aids initial acceleration. The
C200’s extra cost balanced to some extent by once-optional radar cruise control,
360-degree camera, a powered boot lid, active lane-change assist, speed limit
assist and high beam assist. It’s worth noting that Mercedes-Benz has adopted an
Agency sales model which means fixed pricing whichever dealer you go to –
prices non-negotiable. The best way to describe the C200’s performance is
polished – the only negative I found being grabby and figidity brakes especially
when cold. Overall however, the latest Mercedes-Benz C200 is a class act with
enormous presence. I’m David Berthon
