Latest Australian Automobile Association data confirms soaring fuel costs

David Berthon

The latest Australian Automobile Association research date has confirmed that fuel costs in the 12 months to April this year soared by 40 percent. The AAA Transport Affordability Index found vehicle ownership costs had spiked off the back of the Ukraine War and demand effects stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whilst the federal government provided considerable relief at the bowser with the 22-cent cut in fuel excise until September 28 the latest data shows average weekly transport costs lifted to $401.05 in the city and $330.67 in regional areas.

The data shows transport costs have risen to 14.7 per cent of average national income despite a reduction in car loan repayments as a greater proportion of new car buyers chose cheaper vehicles. The Automobile Association confirming fuel costs in Sydney have risen on average by $26.49 to $94.80 a week.
