Hyundai’s Venue SUV – its most affordable model.

David Berthon

Talking about Hyundai’s compact SUV today, the Venue, a light SUV sitting in amongst some excellent competition like Mazda’s CX-3, Toyota’s Yaris Cross and Kia’s Stonic. – the Hyundai Venue is the fourth best-selling light SUV and interestingly the most affordable model Hyundai, even undercutting the Korean manufacturer’s i30 Hatch. Three Hyundai Venue models – the entry model, the mid-spec Active, and top-line Elite – pricing running from $20,490 to $26,740.

The styling is best described as conservative, however with its slimline high mounted LED daytime running lights rather classy, a roomy box like design with good interior space although best for kids in the rear but excellent luggage space, near class leading, aided by the choice of two levels – all models powered by a 1.6-litre non-turbo four-cylinder engine which happily runs on 91 RON petrol. No fire breather here with just 90kW of power, and 151Nm of torque, linked to either a six-speed manual or six speed auto. Considering its pricing position it carries a good degree of technology for the money –

Although, despite the inclusion of autonomy emergency braking, it’s still only qualifies for a four-star ANCAP safety rating – the testing agency unhappy with its camera-based system with its inability to detect cyclists. This aside, the Hyundai Venue is value packed with pedestrian avoidance, lane departure warning and lane keep assist. Warranty, five years, unlimited kilometre.
