Hyundai’s innovative IONIQ 5 all-electric SUV sells out in a heart beat

David Berthon

Pent up interest in Hyundai’s all- new and innovative full electric SUV, the IONIQ 5, was so strong this week that the first batch of 240 sold out on-line within two hours of going on sale.

Hyundai Australia is selling the all-electric SUV through its own website with supply extremely limited due to global production issues and semi-conductor shortages. While a total 400 IONIQ 5’s were initially allocated for Australian delivery the remaining 160 are not expected to enter production until December.

Only one high-spec grade is available with two powertrain options – the rear drive 160kW single motor model at $71,900 and the all-wheel-drive 225kW dual-motor variant at $75,900. With 72.6 kW hour batteries the range is quoted at up to 450Kms.

I viewed several examples this week – the design captivating to say the least, visually innovative and different sitting on 20-inch wheels with a large glass roof and a futuristic interior.

I’m David Berthon.
