The medium SUV segment under $60,000 is one of the hottest selling market segments– the best seller, Mazda’s CX-5 , followed by Toyota’s RAV 4, Nissan’s X-Trail and Hyundai’s Tucson. My favourite Hyundai’s Tucson just ahead of Mazda’s CX-5 and it’s been revitalized with new style, safety and some more tech. Styling changes are inside and out in four grades – Go, Active X, Elite and Highlander – and depending on model, a choice of three engines 2.0-litre petrol, 1.6-litre turbo petrol, 2.0-litre turbo diesel and either front or all-wheel-drive. Again depending on model, a choice of six-speed automatic, 7-speed dual-clutch automatic while diesel variants get a new 8-speed auto. Every model gets tablet- style multimedia with Apple car play and Android Auto. I tested the 1.6-litre turbo petrol Tucson Highlander 7-speed AWD at $46,500. To me it’s the pick of the Tucson bunch – I have a daughter with this model and it’s a great all-rounder – the new model I tested however has a lot more tech and an extensive suite of safety equipment – the new multi-media tablet giving the latest model a lot more appeal, so too some more local suspension and steering tune both of which show much improvement. The top-spec Highlander wears larger 19-inch wheels and importantly despite lower profile tyres the ride quality is unaffected. And every Tucson model comes with a full size spare wheel and tyre. Hyundai quality these days is second to none with warranty listed at 5-years/unlimited with complimentary 12 months roadside assistance. I’m David Berthon
