Hundreds of farm businesses caught underpaying workers

More than half of all businesses investigated by the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Harvest Trail inquiry were in breach of the Fair Work Act.

Various cropping groups including grapes, strawberries, and tomatoes were investigated with the inquiry uncovering widespread non-compliance.

The investigation found 2,500 workers were underpaid more than one million dollars.

Rural reporter Eddie Summerfield spoke with the Ombudsman and the peak advocacy group for vegetable growers.
