Large V8-powered pick-up trucks or super sized utes are the vehicle of choice in America – Locally, we’ve seen similar success with RAM trucks, the popular 1500 model in particular gaining a strong foothold. Just released this week another large dual-cab pick-up, the stylish Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in one dual-cab LTZ Premium edition model at $113,990. Converted to RHD by Holden Special Vehicles in Melbourne the Chevrolet Silverado is powered by a 6.2-litre V8 driving all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic with high and low range and a heavy-duty rear diff lock. Such is the pent-up demand the HSV dealer network already hold orders for the first 200.

With petrol currently under $1 a litre economy is not a problem but even so what surprises with the large powerful super utes is the fact they operate at relatively low revs and high gearing and despite their weight are reasonably fuel efficient. Four drive modes – Touring, Sport, Off-road and Tow/Haul for towing duties with a braked towing capacity of 4500kgs. Specification and safety features are the equal of some luxury cars with 10-way power adjustable heated and ventilated leather seats with memory function, a power sunroof, tyre pressure monitoring, an 8-inch colour touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, colour head-up display, Bose sound system and forward collision alert. HSV incidentally is represented at 65 of Holden’s national dealer network of 203 showrooms.
