Holiday road safety is all about stop revive survive
This year’s road toll in NSW stands at 337 fatalities, 69 more than the same time
last year. Many factors come into play including more people on the road this
year post Covid and also driving standards are dropping. We need to take extra
care at holiday time, you may be planning a long road trip with the family. Fatigue
is the furthest thing from your mind when you set out in the family car however
fatigue related accidents account for more deaths than those attributed to drink
driving. We generally work longer hours and fatigue is far more prevalent so it’s
no coincidence that the highest number of fatal crashes occur in the afternoon
peak period on a Friday. The end of the working day is not the time to head off on
that long drive. Statistics show you’re four times more likely to have a fatal
fatigue crash between the hours of 10pm and dawn so leave early morning after a
good sleep and a hearty breakfast when your energy levels are high. Carry plenty
of water and don’t eat a large meal – eat little and often, Share the driving – one
hour on – one hour off and take a 10-minute break every two hours. And
remember that old adage: STOP REVIVE SURVIVE.
