On the last day of the Jewish high holidays, Israelis were shocked as Hamas and Islamic Jihad launched a massive rocket attack from Gaza, breached hi-tech barriers, and engaged in hostilities inside Israel.

The offensive was unprecedented, revealing a significant intelligence failure by Israel which saw Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declare a state of war and vow consequences for Palestinians.

Militants infiltrated Israeli border communities, taking hostages and causing casualties, as horrifying scenes unfolded. In southern Israel, an all-night dance festival turned into a nightmare as gunfire rained down, resulting in numerous casualties.

By nightfall, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) estimated around 200-300 Palestinian militants were still inside Israel, with multiple ongoing engagements to regain control.
