Foreign licence holders given a deadline to apply for local credentials, but it differs depending on the state
What is it about uniformity of our road rules across Australia – in Queensland, the ACT, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia foreign license holders are required to convert their drivers’ licenses within three months of living in the state. In N.S.W. under new legislation foreign license holders will now have a maximum six months to convert to a N.S.W. license if they want to reside in the state and stay on the road. According to Roads Minister John Graham, many of these motorists will also need to pass a practical driving test to obtain N.S.W. driving credentials, depending on their country of origin and its compatibility to the N.S.W. road system. I would have thought that was a given. Victoria and Tasmania also give foreign license holders six months to convert to a local license but to my mind it should be consistent across the country.
