Economic value study of Australia’s historic vehicle sector produces some staggering results

David Berthon

Most weekends it’s easy to find an enthusiast enjoying his collector car. But how big is our Historic vehicle industry. A new nationwide Economic Value Study conducted by the Australian Motor Heritage Foundation with over 6,000 respondents across 800 motoring clubs has confirmed it represents close to $10 billion in annual expenditure on an estimated 970,000 historic vehicles. A staggering sum and the dedicated team at the Australian Motor Heritage Foundation, located in a purpose-built building at Sydney Motorsport Park, rightly point out the study has shown that the historic vehicle movement is a large and vibrant part of Australia’s society and economy. The survey also reveals the total annual economic impact, including both direct and indirect expenditure, is a staggering $25 billion – the sector creating almost 79,000 jobs generating $6.2 billion in wages and salaries annually. Simply incredible figures.
