Dire warning to diet cola drinkers

Bill Woods

Bill Woods speaks with Fiona Kane, Nutritionist & Holistic Counsellor, about scientists recent warning to diet cola drinkers that one can a day can raise your risk of heart attacks.

Results published in the British Medical Journal from a decade-long trial, adds to a growing pile of evidence that sweeteners may harm health.

Researchers studied the eating habits of 100,000 people and found that the biggest artificial sweeteners fans – those who consume just 78mg/day, similar to what is found in half a can of diet fizzy drink – were nine per cent more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease and 18 per cent more likely to suffer from cerebrovascular disease – conditions affecting the blood flow to the brain.

Aspartame, found in sugar-free drinks, ice cream, and salad dressings, was linked to the biggest risk of stroke. We must stop treating artificial sweeteners as a ‘healthy’ choice.

All sweeteners, natural or artificial, are potentially problematic to our health, says Ms Kane.
