Diesel power on the move

David Berthon

It’s no secret that with international travel restrictions Australians have taken to the road in big numbers – motoring holidays have taken a big upswing resulting in a surge in SUV and Caravan sales – the open road beckons and it’s reflected in a big rise in diesel powered vehicles. Much talk about a falling market for diesel powered vehicles in recent years as we head to electrification has been thrown out the window.

Sales of diesel-powered cars, SUV’S and light commercial vehicles, LCV’s,  jumped 20.7 per cent in the first quarter as buyers specifically sought vehicles for towing. Booming dual cab ute sales, with owners using them more for recreational use rather than traditional commercial use, has had a big impact on diesel sales. 4 x 4 ute sales are up 23.2 per cent this year and of the 20  4 x 4 models available only two are solely petrol and its obvious diesel power isn’t going anywhere soon.
