“COVID hotel quarantines not fit for purpose”
Michael is joined by Dr Andrew Miller, President of the AMA (Australian Medical Association) W.A to discuss his recent opinion piece that looks at the hard truths about hotel quarantines.
Dr Miller writes, ‘with Western Australia subjected to its second lockdown of 2021, it should be absolutely clear to every Australian that our hotel quarantine system is just not fit for purpose.
‘It is claimed by some that the hotel quarantine program has successfully processed tens of thousands of people, but very few of those guests had COVID-19 in the first place, so how would we know if it worked? Well, of those who are positive on arrival about 1 out of every 200 result in a leak to the community in Australia.’
‘This is way too high and increasingly disastrous as rates of infection continue to rise rapidly in arriving passengers. Infecting guests in quarantine of course is grossly negligent and warrants immediate drastic action.’
Dr Miller implores the community to demand what it is entitled to: a professional, high-standard quarantine system, run by quarantine professionals in a much safer manner than it is now.
