Caged chicken farmers demand compensation
Caged egg producers in Victoria will seek compensation when the state implements a deadline to phase out battery hens.
The Federal government will ban the practice by 20-36… but is leaving it up to state and territory ministers to determine their own timelines.
Rural reporter Ella Smith spoke to egg farmer Brian Ahmed, who is on the Victorian Farmers’ Federation’s Egg Group Executive Committee, about how hard the ban will hit caged egg growers and buyers, and why it’s not as easy as it sounds to pivot to free range.
