British synthetic fuel plant proposed for South Australia

David Berthon

The British synthetic fuel company Zero Petroleum has signed a memorandum of understanding with the South Australian government to investigate establishing an e-fuel production plant in the state with the possibility it could be operational by 2026. The company founded by Formula One identity Paddy Lowe in 2020, the former executive director of Mercedes F1 and a technical director of McLaren, already has a strong presence in the U.K and the U.S., recently opening a high tech synthetic fuel plant near Oxford. The synthetic fuel industry is seen by many as a crucial element in the global car industry’s race to lower vehicle emissions. A $1 billion dollar Porsche backed e-fuel plant is already under construction in Tasmania – built by HIF Global which is 12.5 percent owned by Porsche, the plant is projected to produce more than 8 billion litres of e-fuel a year, enough to decarbonize 5 million vehicles.
