Bill Buckle OAM – Automotive pioneer dies aged 96

I was saddened by the news this week that Bill Buckle OAM had passed away at
the age of 96.
In so many ways Bill Buckle was an automotive pioneer, an
innovative designer and builder of cars but also of boats. Very much an inventive
thinker in the car industry over eight decades. Building and racing a car of his
own design, travelling to Europe in the early 1950’s inspiring him to build his own
fibreglass bodied sports car – the Buckle Coupe with Ford Zephyr engine gaining
a string of competition successes. Later, realising the market wanted a small
inexpensive car, he built the fibreglass bodied 300cc two-stroke Goggomobil and
later the popular Goggo Dart sports car. Then building his multi-franchise retail
automotive network in Brookvale. Despite his incredible success Bill Buckle
remained an unassuming and inspiring figure and he will be greatly missed. I’m
