Audi’s updated Q5 40 TDI Quattro SUV – premium features in an entry model

David Berthon

Driving the updated Audi Q5 SUV today – the German company’s second most popular model behind it’s smaller Q3.  I tested the entry Audi Q5 40 TDI Quattro at $68,000 – the most affordable of the three turbo-diesel Q5 SUV’s, $2,000 dearer in this latest iteration but with a welcome lift in specification – a 2.0-litre turbo diesel all-wheel-drive with 400Nm of torque with mild hybrid technology driving through a seven-speed dual clutch automatic.

First impression – it feels so strong it gives the impression of being bulletproof, at 1880 kilos no lightweight but the diesel’s strong torque counters this on road with a quattro or four-wheel-drive system that activates on demand – a quiet diesel too, no noisier to a petrol engine. I managed economy of 6.6L/100kms with mostly stop/start suburban driving.

On the open road it feels unstressed, secure and with a very comfortable ride quality and great brakes. I mentioned its healthy weight and its most noticeable when you open the doors, providing great side impact protection if and when needed. One can see why the Q5 is the No 2 seller in the medium sized premium class – highly equipped, roomy, comfortable in both seat rows and with great finishes. A three year/unlimited kilometre warranty falls short today while service costs seem high but having said that they’re generally on a par with its German competitors.
