Asylum-seeker claims rejected but most remain in the country

Clinton Maynard

The Australian newspaper revealed yesterday the extraordinary number of asylum seekers who have had their claims rejected but remain in the country.

Around 22,000 asylum-seekers came to Australia by plane under Labor’s leadership in the past year with only 12 of 75,000 failed asylum-seekers deported last month.

Home Affairs Department data shows almost 2,000 onshore protection visa applications last month, the highest since last year’s federal election, with this surge due to increased asylum claims by Indian travelers.

Luke speaks to Overnight’s regular Dr Abul Rizvi, former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Immigration & author of “Population Shock”, to seek his solutions to this vexing issue.  Also discussed is the rorting of student visas, for which it appears the Federal government will finally address.
