Animal shelters stretched to the limit post-COVID

Bill Woods

Bill Woods speaks with Melissa Penn, Sydney Dogs and Cats Home general manager, who are stretched to the limit due to calls to surrender pets having shot from 10-20 a week to more than 100 since the Covid-19 lockdown ended.

Ms Penn says cost of living pressure and rent restrictions played a role in the increase with the situation so dire that they cannot take further surrendered pets.

Sydney Dogs and Cats Home, reuniting and re-homing since 1946, is Sydney’s only Charity Pound.  They pride themselves on never placing a time-limit on any animal awaiting adoption.
