More information this week from Alfa Romeo this week on the arrival of its first SUV – the Stelvio will arrive in the first quarter next year, pre-release photos show it to be very good looking – distinctly Alfa Romeo with the Italian maker’s trademark grille. The Stevio can’t come soon enough for Alfa Romeo Aust. – while sales are up this year by 34 per cent it’s from a rather small base with 689 sales to the end of August. Two thirds of those sales are from the new Guilia sedan which is still one of the car industries best kept secrets with no test car available in the Sydney market. The Stelvio however has all the credentials to lift Alfa’s profile – a prestige mid-sized SUV featuring Alfa Romeo Q4 all-wheel- drive system and lightweight body structure with a carbon fibre driveshaft. It arrives here initially with a choice of two all-aluminium engines – 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre turbo diesel, with a potent Quadrifoglio model to follow. I’m David Berthon
