Plastic bags a thing of the past as Woolies enforce ban

Article image for Plastic bags a thing of the past as Woolies enforce ban

Woolworths stores are rolling out their ban on plastic shopping bags and they’ve hit Sydney’s north-west first.

From today, shoppers at Marayong, Dural and Greenway Village Woolworths stores will either have to bring their own shopping bags or get slugged 15c for a reusable bag.

By June 20 the company’s ban will be implemented nationwide.

Planet Arc co-founder Jon Dee welcomes the move, telling Ben Fordham plastic bags are a huge issue.

“The problem with plastic bags that really marks them out is that when they escape landfill… they can last many, many years.

“If a turtle or any other marine animal ends up eating those plastic bags it will usually kill them and when those bodies degrade… those plastic bags are then free to injure or kill other animals as well.”
