A senior federal government MP is urging politicians from all sides to stop point-scoring during the bushfires crisis.

The Nationals and Greens have been embroiled in a bitter attack over the cause of the recent blazes.

A women’s rights campaigner speaking at a Greens media conference made the disgraceful claim that firefighters will return from the frontline and beat their wives.

Earlier, former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce was forced to apologise after saying two people who died in the blazes would have voted for the Greens.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton tells Ray Hadley it needs to stop now.

“Barnaby did the wrong thing. He had the decency to apologise and I just don’t think the Greens have got that level of decency, unfortunately.

“The time now is not for that bickering or points scoring, people can have those debates later on.

“The time now is to do whatever we can to support the firefighters.”
