Peter Dutton: ‘At the moment we’re on track for a Shorten-led government’

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton concedes the Government is on track to lose the next federal election, but has ruled out challenging for the leadership.

The Prime Minister is reportedly being warned by members of his own moderate faction, he may have lost majority support in the party room.

Mr Dutton joins Ray Hadley on the Gold Coast, insisting a change of leader is not the answer to the government’s woes.

“I’ve been in politics for 16 or 17 years. A day’s a long time in politics, that is the reality.

“We’re up against it at the moment. Over the course of the last couple of years the dramas in the Senate, the problems around personal issues, have taken a lot of oxygen out of the message.

“I accepted an offer from Tony Abbott to be in his cabinet and I only did so on the basis of loyalty to the leader.

“Now I’ve accepted the same commission from this Prime Minister and I do it on the basis of loyalty as well and I need to work as part of a team to turn it around.

“But at the moment we’re on track for a Shorten-led government and that would be a disaster for our country.

“From my perspective mate I don’t serve in the cabinet if I cant be loyal, and I think as a team, we can defeat Shorten.”
