Organ recipient’s charity that’ll satisfy your sweet tooth

Seven years ago, Patricia Sheetz was fighting for life, today she’s helping others fighting chronic disease.

At any one time, there are 1400 Australians on the organ transplant waiting list.

Despite this, not enough are registering to be donors.

In 2011, Patricia faced complications from a lifetime of managing type 1 diabetes and urgently needed a lifesaving double organ transplant.

With just months left to live, aged just 27, Patricia received the call that a donor kidney and pancreas were ready for her.

Chris Smith followed Patricia’s journey, visiting her in hospital after her transplant.

Patrica joins Chris to mark the milestone, and talks about the charity she has started to help others fighting chronic illness, The Sweetest Gift.

She is currently fundraising to open her first dessert restaurant in Sydney that will employ and train transplant recipients and people with chronic illness.

“It has been a labor of love so to speak, but something we definitely need and I am hoping to help as many people as we can.”
