Optus customers warned to be on alert as scammers circle

chris smith

Stories of scammers using the Optus hack to try and extort money from Aussies have triggered timely warnings.

One mum has been contacted by a scammer demanding $2000 cash to protect her data.

Meanwhile, the hacker has indicated they won’t release any more personal details after posting the information of 10,000 customers on the dark web.

Tech expert Trevor Long told Chris Smith despite the alleged hacker’s apology, it’s not guaranteed he was the only one with access to the data.

“This is going to go on for days, weeks and years.

“We have to assume that 11 million-odd lines of data … is in the hands of criminals and they’re going to use that to extort you, to scam you, to trick you.”
