Emergency services began a rescue operation today after reports a boat had capsized off Cape Solander at Kurnell.

Two men aged 47 and 61 managed to swim to safety. However a 73-year-old man, who was also the father to one of those rescued, was found floating in the water.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics and lifeguards, he was unable to be revived.

Chris Kenny speaks with Steve Leahey from Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service on this horrific accident and how it could’ve so easily been prevented.

“This is a tragic accident.

“None of them, when they were rescued, were wearing life jackets.

“Our crews report seeing life jackets in the water near the overturned boat.

“We’ve seen a number of boating accidents and sadly this one has claimed a life today.”

The Marine Area Command urges all persons on the water, especially on boats, to always wear a life jacket where appropriate.
