NSW Labor set to water down tough protest laws

Ben Fordham has revealed the Labor Party is expected to pass a push to repeal heavy penalties for protesters who block roads or trains.

The NSW Labor Party conference on October 15 will determine the official policy position Labor takes to next year’s state election.

A push to water down tough protest laws will be put forward at the conference.

The Breakfast host has been told the motion, backed by unions and at least 10 local Labor branches, is likely to pass.

The motion reads:

“This bill fundamentally attacks the right to peaceful protest that is at the very heart of our democracy.

“It also represents a direct assault on unprotected industrial action.

“We call on the Party to immediately commit to the repeal of this legislation.”

The laws were brought in after climate protesters brought Sydney to a standstill almost weekly earlier in the year.

“These people just don’t get it,” Ben said.

“Chris Minns should be worried.”

Other proposals set to be voted on at the Labor conference include:

1. Bringing back mandatory masks and COVID density limits

2. Banning all new coal and gas projects

3. Raising the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14
