NSW government quietly ends pause on Kosciuszko culling, advocates claim

Mark Levy

The NSW government has allegedly resumed shooting brumbies in the Snowy Mountains after claiming to have ordered a freeze.

Environment Minister James Griffin told Ray Hadley on September 16 all culls would be paused while a review into public safety took place.

But without notice that shootings would resume, brumby advocates discovered at least three horses had been killed near Gavels Hut 4 in Nungar.

“Probably the worst part is, Ray, that Gravels Hut is on a walking track,” former Snowy Mountain Brumby Sustainability and Management Group president Alan Lanyon told Ray Hadley.

“There’s every indication, possibility that there would’ve been recreational park users in the vicinity, possibility at the time that …  at least three horses were blasted to death.”

Minister Griffin this morning denied culling has resumed in the national park, claiming the photos shared by advocates were “old and from before the pause occurred”.

“Well, how do you know that?” Ray asked. “How do you know with any surety, Minister?

“On what basis do you tell me they were shot before the pause on September 16? What proof do you have for me?”
