A New South Wales council has stopped slapping motorists parking fines.

Instead, the one and only parking inspector at Bland Shire Council will leave a gentle reminder asking the vechile owner to not overstay the car space’s time limit.

“We can’t really understand what all the fuss is about,” says Bland Shire Mayor Brian Monaghan.

He tells Natalie Peters and Erin Molan the reminder system “works very well”.

“If we take an easy-going approach and just put a reminder there, people are more inclined to just do the right thing naturally. It’s just the way it happens, it’s just human nature.”

But Mayor Monaghan says there is more behind the move.

“It is very hard at the moment. A lot of farmers out here are living on about 10 per cent of their normal income.

“We just feel that if you came to town to buy your groceries and a parking inspector put a fine on your car in addition to what you’re going through, it would just kind of be the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
