NSW coal power station considered for government funding

A NSW coal-fired power station is among a dozen projects considered to be underwritten by the federal government, in order to maintain a reliable power supply.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the shortlist comes after a recommendation from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for the government to underwrite projects that can provide reliable power.

Delta Energy bought the Vales Point Power Station in 2015, the only coal-fired power station to make the list.

Delta Energy’s Chairman Trevor St Baker tells Ross Greenwood upgrades would extend the life and viability of the plant.

“It’s there to improve the efficiency and reduce the greenhouse emissions for the next 10 years at least.

He says the upgrade would allow for “24/7 power to back up the rest of the generation which will be renewables.”
