A viral video has reignited debates around the participation of transgender athletes in sports after a fourth-placed runner appeared to give a thumbs-down during an awards ceremony.

Athena Ryan, a junior trans athlete secured a silver medal in the varsity girls’ 1600m run. However, her accomplishment has sparked backlash online.
