No hipsters thanks: Inner city pub wants hi-vis over man buns

It appears there’s a bit of a cultural war brewing in Sydney’s inner city between hi-vis-wearing tradies and hipsters with man buns.

Some pubs won’t welcome workers in their steel-capped boots after 5pm, but one local joint is fighting back.

Abbott’s Hotel in Waterloo is changing tact, welcoming tradies with open arms whether they’re in hi-vis or not.

The Hotel’s owner Bill Smith says they’re a “working class pub in a working class area” and fedora-wearing hipsters shouldn’t take precedence over tradies.

“There’s plenty of pubs that have signs up saying after five no hi-vis gear, no work boots allowed,” he tells Chris Kenny.

“We wanted to make a stand and let all of the tradies, and all of the hi-vis-wearing workers, let them know they’re welcome at Abbott’s Hotel.”

Bill says his tongue is “firmly in cheek” and of course, all patrons are welcome to a $5 schooner.

“We welcome everybody down to Abbott’s but we’ve had a lot of response from tradies saying, ‘well done, we need somewhere where we are welcome and not looked down upon.'”
