A nine-year-old boy is among those caught defying the statewide total fire ban as bushfire conditions worsen.

The boy lit a fire with a blowtorch on Worrigee just before noon today, but due to his age was only issued a warning under the Young Offenders Act.

Three other men have been caught lighting fires in Wallacia, Prestons and Lalor Park and were issued with on-the-spot fines of $2200.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys tells Karl Stefanovic the total fire ban has been extended for tomorrow.

“Some people would say they don’t understand.

“But it’s pretty clear when we talk about a total fire ban right across NSW, it means exactly that.”
